MYKONOS ISLAND GREECE STOCK PHOTOS, STOCK PICTURES & PHOTO ART PRINTS
Stock photos gallery of the Greek Cycldes Island of Mykonos. Mykonos is a Greek island and a top tourist destination, renowned for its cosmopolitan character which attracts large numbers of tourists. Mykonos is one of the most cosmopolitan islands in Greece, known for its diverse and intense nightlife as evidenced by a vast number of bars and nightclubs. Mykonos is also known for its sandy beaches. The island has an international airport, and is a frequent destination for cruise ships. Mykonos town mascot is Petros was a White Pelican. In 1958 a wounded pelican was found off the coast of Mykonos shore by a local fisherman. The pelican was nursed to health and remained on the island supported by locals. It soon adopted the name “Petros”, as a joke between the locals, as “petro” in Greek means rock, stone but metaphorically hard and horny. To great disappointment by locals and tourists alike, Petros was hit by a car on 2 December 1985 and failed to recover. Today another Pelcan called Petros wanders at will around Mykonos surprising tourits in the narrow lanes. Petros has been joined by Georgiana a female white Pelican. Our stock photos and pictures show Petros junior by The Church of Panagia Paraportiani. The building of this church started in 1425 and was not completed until the 17th century. This impressive, whitewashed church actually consists of five other churches attached all together: the four churches (Saint Estathios, Saint Sozon, Saints Anargyroi and Saint Anastasia) are all on the ground and constitute the base of the fifth church that has been built on top of them. This architectural spottiness has made Panagia Paraportiani the most photographed church on Mykonos. Our stock photos & Pictures also show the famous Little Venice district of Mykonos. Here the buildings have been constructed right on the sea’s edge with their balconies overhanging the water. The other great symbol of Mykonos that can be seen in our stock photos & pictures are The windmills of Mykonos which have become the trademark of the whole island. They can be seen from every point of Chora village and they are the first thing to see when the ship gets close to the harbour, as they stand on a hill overlooking the area. There are 16 windmills today on Mykonos. Most of them were built by the Venetians in the 16th century and till the early 20th century, they were used to grind the wheat. They were an important source of income for the inhabitants and supported a lot the economy of Mykonos in difficult times. With the evolution of economy, their use gradually declined till they stop working in the middle of the 20th century.
