This Month : Hungary Photography Showcase

Hungary is a land locked country sitting in the center of Europe on the main land & river trading routes between East & West. Hungary is cut in half by the Danube river which runs from the north of Hungary south through Budapest to the Croatian border. To the west of the Danube was the Roman province of Pannonia and the Roman fort just outside Budapest was part of a line of fortifications that ran along the Danube then up the Rhine that marked the Eastern border of the Roman Empire.

Hungary was on the front line of defense against the tribes that pushed into Europe from the East. The first was Attila the Hun who in 434 extracted gold tribute from Romans in return for peace. This lasted for a few years then Attila returned, crossed the Danube and sacked the Roman towns of Pannonia. Eventually Atilla would advance as far as Italy and Amiens in France.

In 1223 Ghengis Khan's sons army defeated the Hungarian King at the battle of Mohacs and Europe was left open to Mongol conquest. Luckily for Europe Ghengis Khan died and his sons had to return home with their armies to vote for a new Khan. The next invaders were the Turks who occupied Hungary for 150 years eventually being expelled by the Austrian Empire. By this time Hungary was massively under populated so the Austrians invited Swabians Germans to settle in Hungary.

Under the Austrians a massive regeneration took place and Hungarian towns were given a Baroque makeover. This has left a country with a diverse heritage of coffee houses and paprika peppers from the Turks and Baroque palaces & merchant houses from the prosperity brought by the Austro Hungarian Empire.

Funky Stock is a boutique library with photos by multi award winning London photographer Paul Williams. Paul has worked at the cutting edge of advertising, design and editorial in London for over 25 years. In the early days his cookery book photography won him a prestigious Glenfiddich cookery book award for a Dorling Kindersley's "Yan Kits Kitchen".

In later years Paul Williams has concentrated on big brand packaging and advertising including British household names like Waitrose, Marks & Spencer and Tesco. This work earned him Gold DNAD awards in the UK, Cleo awards in the USA and a Silver Rose of Mont re au Advertising festival.

Now Paul Williams has turned his attention to stock photography and he is well on his way to achieving his ambition of producing a world class stock boutique library with creative and highly professional food and travel photos.
