This Month : Sicily Photography Showcase

Showcase-Sicily Photos, Pictures & Images - Images by Paul Williams

Sicily has been part of Mediterranean history for over 2500 years. Long before the Romans ruled Sicily the Greeks had city states on the Island. Archimedes lived in the Greek City of Syracuse and was killed by a Roman soldier when it was sacked in 212 BC. There are bigger Greek archeological sites, like Selanute, in Sicily than in Greece.

The Romans valued Sicily for its fertility and as a natural center of trade in the Mediterranean. The Villa Romana del Casale has 3500 square meters of Romana mosaics, the largest in the world. This was probably an Emperors residence and the mosaics depict lavish hunting scenes, the Circus Maximum and charmingly a room full of Bikini Girls.

During the Arab expansions through North Africa, Sicily fell to Muslim rule and gained from this architecturally architecturally as well as adding new recipes to the cosmopolitan Sicilian Cuisine.

The Normans ruled Sicily in the Middle ages and left spectacular mosaics in the church at the Norman Palace in Palermo, Monreale & Cefalu Cathedrals.

On January 11, 1693 Sicily was rocked by a tremendous earthquake which destroyed most of the towns in South East Sicily. A rebuilding program was undertaken which has left a string of towns from Noto to Siracusa with some of the most magnificent Baroque buildings in Europe. Noto was rebuilt as a model Baroque town and Syracuse Cathedral is a spectacular Baroque building.

Sicily is a fascinating Island with the largest active volcano in Europe dominating the Island. Its diverse history and cultures, laced with overtones of the "Godfather", make it a compelling island to visit and explore.
